█ To create your new Windows opening splash screen logo:
■ Exit Windows & go to DOS command level (ie: "DOS prompt").
■ Change to the drive & directory into which you have placed the
included RLE files & MAKEWIN.BAT file. (You may place them into any
new or existing directory, including your Windows SYSTEM directory.)
■ Run the following command, substituting your Windows drive/directory
for "c:\windows" and substituting the RLE file of your choice for
"file", without typing the RLE extension.
MAKEWIN c:\windows file (example: MAKEWIN D:\WINDOWS MCKYLOG)
This will create a new COM file in your Windows directory, with the
same name as the RLE file that you typed in place of "file" in the
above command. (example: MCKYLOG.COM)
The included RLE files that you may choose from are as follows:
BLAKLOG1 RLE 29,468 02-03-94 5:50p
BLAKLOG2 RLE 24,756 02-03-94 5:46p
CRAKLOG RLE 28,366 02-10-94 1:06p
MACLOG1 RLE 36,718 02-02-94 12:43a
MACLOG2 RLE 20,204 02-19-94 10:46p
* MCKYLOG RLE 27,942 02-01-94 11:41p
MIRRLOG RLE 28,898 02-03-94 6:04p
NOWINLOG RLE 30,780 02-09-94 11:16p
QAKELOG RLE 31,248 02-03-94 2:42p
SCRNLOG1 RLE 18,730 02-08-94 3:30p
SCRNLOG2 RLE 20,116 02-09-94 1:28a
SPDRLOG RLE 35,846 02-01-94 11:42p
UH-LOG RLE 10,082 02-03-94 5:45p
UPDNLOG RLE 28,898 02-03-94 6:05p
WIDELOG RLE 23,098 02-03-94 5:49p
* (This is the darn file that started this whole mess!)
You may, of course, preview all of these RLE files with any graphics
program capable of displaying RLE files (aka: RLE-4 compressed BMP).
■ Change to your Windows directory and run the new COM file that you
have created, as mentioned above. (example: MCKYLOG)
■ If you like the results you may, of course, henceforth run Windows
with the new COM file, or rename/delete the existing WIN.COM and then
copy or rename the new COM file to WIN.COM.
example: RENAME WIN.COM WINCOM1.SAV
COPY MCKYLOG.COM WIN.COM
You may also, of course, create all 15 COM files and run/copy/rename
them as you wish, disk space & desire permitting.

█ To install your new Windows Mickey-Fantasia wallpaper:
■ You may do the following from either Windows or DOS.
■ Choose one of the following files according to your Windows
screen resolution/color count and copy it to your Windows
directory (you may copy all, if you have the disk space):
640x480 x 16 colors » MICFAN-1.BMP
640x480 x 256 colors » MICFAN-2.BMP
800x600 X 256 colors » MICFAN-3.BMP
1024x768 x 256 colors » MICFAN-4.BMP
These files are in BMP/RLE compressed format to save disk space.
(For example, file #4 is only 30K, but would be 788K in standard
Windows BMP format!) Please! Don't thank me! Just throw money.
■ Run the Windows Control Panel and then the Desktop module. In the
Wallpaper section select MICFAN-#.BMP according to your current
Windows screen resolution and color count. Click the "Center"
button and then click the "OK" button. Close all open windows and
reduce Program Manager and/or any shell/menu program(s) to icon(s).
Now you should see "Fantasia's Mickey pointing to the stars....."
You may try any of the four BMP files & use the one that looks best
with your current Windows setup. (Variables affecting this choice
are: video card, video driver, selected resolution, selected color
count, monitor brightness/contrast settings.)
PS: You can also use any of the RLE logo files as wallpaper. Just
copy the desired file(s) to your Windows directory & select the
one you want via the Control Panel, typing the file name with
its RLE extension.
PPS: There is also one more BMP file that you may use as wallpaper,
MACRUL.BMP, which is 640x480 @ 256 colors.

█ A note to those with only one set of standard-issue eyes:
An URGENT WARNING about SCREEN FLICKER:
Unless you are constructed similarly to the android "Data" on
StarTrek, do NOT buy any video card or monitor UNLESS it is capable
of 72Hz (or higher) refresh rate in ALL of the applications that you
use! In addition to Windows & OS/2, this includes plain vanilla DOS
itself, ALL standard DOS applications, such as DOSSHELL running in
any mode, and any full-white-screen text or graphical DOS program.
(eg: WordPerfect 6.0 DOS version in Graphics mode, etc.)
Thorough testing (& many hours of my own tired-eye experience) has
proven that monitor screen flicker from slower refresh rates, even
though not immediately perceived, causes eye strain in ALL users and
headaches, nausea, and extreme eye strain in many users.
This 72Hz refresh rate is an absolute MINIMUM! There are several
cards that can provide 90Hz, and the standard may become ~120Hz!
In buying your video card & monitor, make sure that this 72Hz rate
(or faster) is available within ALL of the following circumstances:
» All DOS text programs, including DOS itself.
» All DOS graphical programs.
» All graphical operating systems & environments, such as
O/S2, Windows, Desqview, Geoworks, etc.
» The highest screen resolution & color count that you will
be using in any of the above programs.
For example: 640x480 @ 16 colors, or 800x600 @ 256 colors,
or 800x600 @ 16.7M colors, or 1024x768 @ 256 colors, etc.
Yes, cards & monitors meeting these specs will cost more - but what
price do you put on your eyes & your health? I'm not selling cards
or monitors - I'm just giving some proven words of wisdom.
CAUTION: Many video card & monitor manufacturers seem to put lots of
effort into cleverly UNinforming you of their product's capabilities
and specifications. So, be sure to buy from a reputable source that
will allow you to return the product if it does not meet all of these
important eye/health requirements.
